I am sure all of us experienced flow in some form or the other . For me it happens

When I am reading a book,

When I used to play cricket or badminton,

When I used to solve a bug or a problem,

When I am coding (which has been relatively less over the last few years, but has picked up in the last couple of months)

When I am with my kids

When I am yapping with my close group of friends

and of late

When I am writing

These are moments where I am totally involved in what I am doing and lose any sense of time. I do not need to keep looking at my mobile screen

In simple terms, flow is a state where you lose all sense of time and immerse yourself completely into what you possibly are doing

“The author defines flow as the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.”

This is a classic book and classic means this books has stood the test of time and will stand the test of time.

The author goes through the impact of flow in various aspects of our life, why is it important, what difference it makes to the quality of our life and living.

He then proceeds to highlight if a flow like state can be cultivated.

He states

“Activity and reflection should ideally complement and support each other. Action by itself is blind, reflection impotent. Before investing great amounts of energy in a goal, it pays to raise the fundamental questions: Is this something I really want to do ? Is it something I enjoy doing ? Am I likely to enjoy it in the foreseeable future ? Is the price that I and others will have to pay worth it ? Will I be able to live with myself if I accomplish it ?

If goals are well chosen and if we have the courage to abide by it despite opposition, we shall be so focused on the actions and events around us that we won’t have the time to be unhappy. And then we shall have directly feel a sense of order in the warp and the woof of life that fits every thought and emotion into a harmonious whole.”

This book does not fall into the category of light reading. It is a heavy reading book which would make allowance for you to go into your own self deeply.  However if you persist and complete the book, you will go back to it for reference as and when you feel like going back to it.

See if you want to recognize your flow moments and evolve a path to get into it at will.
