This is one question that keeps coming back to me .

On a lighter vein, I think that is the reason I had the foresight to name the first series of Articles as “Startup Journey” .  I had the foresight to realize that I may go nowhere with it !

When you take your morning walk are you just in it for the walk or do you have those super sophisticated gadgets  and apps that keeps you updated on how you are faring on your daily walk ?

Couple of years back, I ran the standard chartered full marathon, without any preparation and gave up after 25 Kilometers. How did I feel ? Did I pat myself for having the spirit to take up the marathon or did I chide myself for not being a finisher ?

I think we all have heard ‘ Life is a journey. Enjoy it’ and also ‘Success is a journey. Not a destination’.

However I wonder isn’t life a series of small journeys and destinations ?

We all know about the one permanent destination and there is no escaping that.

If we discount that, will be we better off taking only journeys without worrying about the destination ?

Robert J Hastings in his poem ‘The Station’  gives a good account of this and concludes by saying

” So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.”

For once I possibly beg to differ.

It is important to pace the aisles and count the miles.

‘Enjoy the journey’ is I think mostly for comforting my own self when I do not make the destination .

Remove the destination and there is no journey

It is the thrill of reaching the destination that makes the journey interesting and in that sense I would have been happy completing the marathon and proving myself to be a finisher.

What do you think ?

For you, Is it the journey or the destination ?
